Sermon Introduction

📅 Date: 2nd February 2025 📍 Preacher: Reverend Dr. Johnson Abimbola 📖 Bible Reading: 2 Kings 18:17-37

Life’s battles often seem most intense when all hope appears lost. Sometimes, the enemy seems to be gaining the upper hand, and we question how victory is possible. But the truth is—God is always in control.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV) reminds us:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

Just as God delivered King Hezekiah from the hands of the Assyrians, He is still the same God today, promising us victory when we rely on Him.

Key Points from the Sermon

1. Don’t Be Afraid of Your Fear

📖 2 Kings 18:19 – “On what are you basing this confidence of yours?”

The enemy always tries to instill fear and doubt. The Assyrians degraded King Hezekiah and mocked his faith, attempting to shake his trust in God. In the same way, our challenges may try to convince us that we are powerless.

But as Numbers 21:9 and John 3:14 remind us, we no longer need to fear because Jesus Christ has been lifted up for our victory.

🔥 Prayer: Lord, break every spirit of fear in my life!

2. Don’t Depend on Human Power

📖 2 Kings 18:21 – “Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it!”

Many times, we place our trust in human connections, wealth, or influence, thinking they will save us. But Jeremiah 17:5-6 warns: – “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength.”

The world may promise security, but true protection comes only from God.

🔥 Prayer: Lord, help me to trust in You alone!

3. Depend on God for Your Victory

📖 2 Kings 19:1 – “When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord.”

King Hezekiah sought God’s help through prayer and divine intervention. He took two key actions:

  1. He sent messengers to Prophet Isaiah for counsel.
  2. He went into the temple to pray.

His heartfelt plea in 2 Kings 19:14-19 demonstrated his complete trust in God. In response, God assured victory!

📖 2 Kings 19:32-34 – “He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there… By the way that he came, by the same shall he return.”

🔥 Prayer: Lord, I rely on Your promises for divine victory!

Standing on God’s Promises

🛡️ God is faithful to His promises, and when we stand firm in faith, He will fight our battles. As Russell Kelso Carter’s hymn declares: “Standing on the promises that cannot fail, When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God.”

Summary & Key Takeaways

Don’t be afraid of your fears.
Don’t depend on human power.
Depend on God for your victory.

No matter what you face, God is your defender, your stronghold, and your victory! 🙏🏾
